BRT Routes Unveiled
- By Kevin Zolkiewicz
The Chicago Tribune unveiled today in an article the four routes that will receive Bus Rapid Transit service as part of a previously-announced funding agreement.
The CTA will operate BRT on 79th, Chicago, Halsted, and Jeffery. Along each route, the CTA will build special transit stations that will allow for pre-payment of fares. The stations will feature electronic next-bus signage linked to CTA’s Bus Tracker, similar to the one currently installed at Madison and Jefferson.
The CTA is also looking into the possibility of offering “public bicycles” that will be available at stations for free or at a small fee.
The Tribune also revealed that initially the bus-only would revert to use by all vehicles during non-peek hours, but long-term would operate all day.
